THEMES for future meetings
There's always room for your own table discussion - and there's usually a main theme, with a guest to kick-start that main theme at around 7.00p.m.
Two items have come to our attention over the months and these will appear from time to time over the rest of this year.
ONE is the issue of ECONOMIC GROWTH in a finite world;
THE OTHER might be summed up as THE REAL BIOSPHERE DRIVERS toward environmental change.
They are of course interlinked - for anybody with their head above the "silo" walls of their own particular sector of society - be that business; education; politics; academia; or activism. Under the second we are inviting a guest who has spent time at the heart of military research in US and here (not palatable to many but nevertheless often the source of much new knowledge). A date is not yet fixed, but may be early autumn. Our attention will be drawn on that occasion to some "inconvenient truths" about THE REAL DRIVERS OF CLIMATE CHANGE!!
1st JUNE 2010
Economic Growth in a Finite World - we are seeing the beginnings of a public debate on this issue - slow in arriving, and emerging despite the lack of any such in the media, all of whom seem wedded to the opinions of the "experts" who have helped drive us into recession!
It might be worth noting that the JULY issue of New Internationalist will focus on this issue. We'll be picking up on its stance in later sessions.
On 1st June, NARCYS PIOTROWSKI provides some controversial views on MONEY.
*************** BRUM GREEN DRINKS - GENERAL GUIDELINES Of course, you don't have to have a meal in order to join in, although it helps us to have an idea of meal numbers in advance. Erkan, our host, provides an excellent special menu, plenty of choice, including vegan and vegetarian dishes - "I've produced a 'green menu' printed of course on green paper", he informs us! You can arrive early, straight from work or other activities. Meals and/or drinks can be ordered anytime from 6.00p.m.; and any "guest" for the evening is introduced at about 7.00p.m. There's no closing time; people stay for as long or as short a time as they wish. (As a guide, the main discussion usually lasts about an hour and a half; and after the guest's initial 10 minutes [maximum], people are free to join in or go back to doing their own thing.) Green Drinks provides an excellent meeting place, as it's more of a club atmosphere than an ordinary restaurant. THERE'S ALWAYS TABLES FOR THOSE WISHING TO HOLD THEIR OWN DISCUSSIONS ********* Since our launch in November, TOM BAKER, who was our first guest, has confirmed plans to establish a COMMUNITY BAKERY in Birmingham! TOM BAKER provided an apt launch on the subjecct of BREAD which he bakes at his home here in Birmingham. There were some sobering statistics on the state of our mass produced version of this "staff of life". But also some encouraging suggestions as to how we might return to a healthier and more sustainable way of feeding ourselves. They’ll listen - they’ll answer back - and together we’ll create a new kind of society..."
